Monday, 10/01/2018 - Gittis 214 - Cosponsored by Penn Law's American Constitution Society Justice Cardozo said, freedom of expression is “the indispensable condition, of nearly every other form of freedom.” As we seek “justice for all,” join the Federalist Society and the American Constitution Society in discussing how vital the First Amendment is to achieving the freedoms pursued by social justice initiatives. Panelists include Joe Cohn (Legislative & Policy Director; FIRE), Catherine Sevcenko (Director of Legal Strategy; Equal Justice Under Law), Shelby Emmett (Director of Free Speech; American Legislative Exchange) and others to be announced who will discuss the First Amendment's intersection with social justice. The event will be in Gittis 214, with lunch for those who RSVP.
This program has been approved for 1.0 substantive CLE credits for Pennsylvania lawyers. CLE credit may be available in other jurisdictions as well. Attendees seeking CLE credit should bring separate payment in the amount of $40.00 ($10.00 public interest/non-profit attorneys) cash or check made payable to The Trustees of the University of Pennsylvania.

Wednesday - 9/26 - 12:00 pm - Gittis 2 On Wednesday, September 26, at noon, please join the Penn Law Federalist Society in welcoming David Lat, Founder and Managing Editor of Above the Law. After graduating from Yale Law, Mr.Lat clerked for Judge Diarmuid O’Scannlain (9th Circuit) and worked at Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz. In 2008, Mr. Lat founded Above the Law, a blog dedicated to discussing law firms, the legal profession, and various legal debates. Mr. Lat will speak on the Judge Kavanaugh's nomination, the accusations against him, and his potential impact if confirmed. Professor Kermit Roosevelt will provide responsive commentary. The event will take place in Gittis 2, and food from Chick-fil-A will be served.
51 Imperfect Solutions: The Role of the States in Constitutional Law with Judge Jeffrey Sutton9/21/2018 Join the Penn Law Federalist Society on Wednesday, September 19 (at noon) as we welcome Judge Jeffrey Sutton of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. After graduating from The Ohio State University’s Moritz College of Law in 1990, Judge Sutton clerked for Judge Thomas Meskill of the Second Circuit, and Justices Lewis Powell and Antonin Scalia on the Supreme Court. Prior to taking the bench, Judge Sutton served for three years as the Solicitor General of Ohio, arguing on behalf of the state of Ohio in both state and federal court. Judge Sutton is an expert on state constitutional law and recently published 51 Imperfect Solutions: States and the Making of American Constitutional Law.

Her practice focuses on Supreme Court, appellate, and constitutional litigation. Erin has been recognized by many organizations, including the National Law Journal who listed her as one of the nation’s “Outstanding Women Lawyers” and a “Rising Star." Come listen to her speak on Gill v. Whitford and the future of Gerrymandering. Penn Law's own Mitch Berman will also be providing remarks.
