About the Chapter
The Federalist Society for Law and Public Policy Studies is a group of conservatives and libertarians interested in the law. It is founded on the principles that the state exists to preserve freedom, that the separation of governmental powers is central to our Constitution, and that it is emphatically the province and duty of the judiciary to say what the law is, not what it should be. The society seeks both to promote an awareness of these principles and to further their application through its activities.
Penn Federalist Society seeks to increase discussion and promote debate on campus. We are here to open intellectual and social doors, not close them. We rely on students of all backgrounds and ideologies to meet this mission. Our members are diverse and often hold conflicting views on a broad range of issues. In 2019, the Chapter was named Benjamin Franklin Breakout Chapter of the Year.
In the past few years, several of our members have graduated as valedictorians of their class. Many of our members have clerked on the U.S. Supreme Court, the Federal Courts of Appeals and District Courts, and state courts. Other members have joined large law firms or served in government positions.
Many federal judges have spoken at our events, including then-Judge Amy Coney Barrett, Judge Stephanos Bibas, Judge Daniel Bress, Judge John Cronan, Judge Kent Jordan, Judge Paul Matey, Judge William Pryor, Judge Chad Readler, and Judge David Stras. Other past speakers include Professor Stephanie Barclay, Paul Clement, Ohio Solicitor General Benjamin Flowers, Scott Keller, Professor Michael Stokes Paulsen, Mark Rienzi, Kannon Shanmugam, Ilya Shapiro, and many others.
